Top Movies

Alright, here we go. I've decided to let you all in on my top 10 favorite movies of 2007. As you'll see, I like the regular old run-of-the-mill Hollywood blockbusters as well as the more artsy-fartsy flicks. This year, my favorites skew more towards the independent artsy flicks that likely didn't make their way to middle America. So if you're at all interested in any of them, I highly encourage you to add them to your Netflix queue (or rent them from Blockbuster if you still roll old school style). So, without further ado, the countdown of my 10 favorite movies of 2007.

10) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Don't be confused. While this did star Brad Pitt, it falls somewhere between the traditional Hollywood offering and the small independent film. It was backed by a big studio's main production arm, but the budget was only $30 million, which is relatively tiny for a vehicle starring one of the most famous movie stars on the planet. I don't even think it was distributed much outside of the major markets, which is a shame. This is just a beautifully shot movie. The title is pretty self-explanatory. It follows the final days of Jesse James and develops the characters and relationships that led to his death. While Brad Pitt was pretty darn good in his role, the revelation of this film was Casey Affleck (Ben's little bro). He was amazing, and I won't be surprised to see him take home the Oscar for Supporting Actor. Now, if you don't appreciate the art of scenery and character development, then you will probably find it to be kinda slow. But if you have any appreciation for the art of film, you will not be disappointed.

9) Zodiac. Zodiac is the first traditional Hollywood film to make my list. I believe this was a wide release, but pretty much bombed at the box office. Its failure makes me sad because it is indicative of the dumbing down of films for mainstream acceptance. Most of America just won't sit through a film and watch a story unfold unless things are being blown up in the process. Zodiac is a fictionalized account of a real life serial killer that terrorized the San Francisco area during the '70s. It's not a scary movie, but rather a drama about the individuals whose lives became consumed with tracking him down. This is another beautifully shot movie that crafts what I would classify as the most engaging story of the year.

8) Ratatouille. Ah, Pixar! How you are able to suck me in with your wacky animation despite my increasing age, I will never understand. All I know is I'll be there opening weekend any time you release a new one. You all know what Ratatouille is about unless you've been living under a rock. I don't have much to say about this other than it was fun, clever, and heartfelt. Pixar's stories and animation just keep getting better, and I'm looking forward to WALL-E this summer.

7) The Bourne Ultimatum. Bourne is an example of how Hollywood can still produce well-made movies that appeal to the masses. It had action, drama, suspense, sharp dialogue and by golly gee a narrative that required you to be halfway intelligent to follow. After first being introduced to him in Good Will Hunting, I would have never imagined in a million years that Matt Damon would become my favorite action hero!

6) Lars and the Real Girl. If you don't know who Ryan Gosling is outside of The Notebook, then you need to step away from the computer and go to your local video store right now. Rent Half Nelson, Fracture, The United States of Leland, and The Believer. He is, in my opinion, the greatest actor of my generation. His performance in Lars was my favorite male performance of the year. His ability to get lost in a role and be somebody completely different from film to film is utterly amazing. I'm going to guess that most of you have never even heard of this movie because it barely played here in LA. Lars tells the story of an emotionally awkward man who purchases a blow-up doll and introduces her to his family and friends as his girlfriend. I know it sounds bizarre, but it is a poignant story of how emotional scars can haunt you into adulthood and how far we will go to help/accommodate our loved ones.

5) Waitress. Waitress was one of the films I had anticipated the most because I am a huge Keri Russell fan. I was obsessed with The Mickey Mouse Club in junior high and thought she was without a doubt the coolest mousketeer. Then she did Felicity, which is one of my all-time favorite TV shows. Why she isn't a huge star yet is beyond me. I thought M:I III was going to be her big breakout only to find her killed 20 minutes into the film (oops, sorry if I spoiled that for you). Waitress is about a small-town girl stuck in a crappy marriage who finds herself pregnant and falling for her doctor. It's sweet and funny and well-acted - everything you can ask from a small independent comedy. Plus, you'll walk away craving some delicious pie!

4) The Nines. I dedicated a whole post to The Nines after I saw it, so I'm just going to refer you to that rather than write it again here. I know, I know...I'm requiring you to do a little bit of work by scrolling through my past posts, but I have confidence that you can do it! And just in case you're too lazy, I'll go ahead and tell you briefly that it's a well-written, well-acted, thought provoking allegory about the relationship between the creator and his creation.

3) Once. Once has got to be the biggest surprise of 2007 for me. This is the most independent of independent movies that made my list. It's an independent Irish musical that was shot for $150,000 starring two musicians who had never acted before and likely never will again. I heard about it from a friend, and we decided to go on a road trip down to Irvine (Orange County) to eat at Chick-fil-A and see this movie (there are no Chick-fil-A's in LA, in case you were wondering why we did this). I was absolutely blown away! It tells the story of a musician in Dublin who meets a Czech immigrant while playing on the street corner one evening. More than the dialogue, the songs are what drive the story and highlight their burgeoning friendship and attempt to write songs and record them over the course of the next week. This is another movie that I'm going to have a hard time recommending. You have to like music to like this movie. And you have to listen to the lyrics because they encompass the heart and soul of the movie. But if you like music, then please check out this flick. You will not regret it!

2) Hairspray. It's no secret...I love musicals! On the stage, on the screen, I don't care. If there's singing and dancing, I'm probably going to enjoy it. I often wish we could spontaneously break out into song and dance in real life, but alas, I have to keep these desires locked up in my mind. You all know the story of Hairspray, so I'm going to bypass the summary. This movie was just pure fun! I saw it in the theater twice, bought it the day it came out on DVD, and have watched it three more times since. If you like Grease, Moulin Rouge, Chicago, etc. or even if you're just nostalgic for the '60s, then you're going to love this film.

1) Juno. Now we've arrived at what is my hands-down favorite movie of the year. This movie just came out and since it's a littly indie film, I'm going to assume it's playing absolutely nowhere in middle America except in maybe some of the bigger cities. But it's getting great word of mouth, and I'm hoping it'll become the little engine that could and make its way to some of the smaller markets. Juno is about a 16 year old girl who gets pregnant and searches for adoptive parents in the local Pennysaver ads. The tagline says it all, "A comedy about growing up...and the bumps along the way." What I loved about this story is how it recognizes we're going to make mistakes, but it's how we handle those mistakes that makes us who we are. Ellen Page plays Juno and gives my favorite female performance of the year. Don't be surprised to hear her name called at the Oscars - she was that good! Juno is fresh, smart, witty, and absolutely worth checking out if you get the chance.

Wicked

Last night, I finally got to go see Wicked! It's been playing in LA since February, and I've wanted to go ever since it came out. I'm a huge fan of musical theater. I don't know where I get it from because no one else in my family really cares for it! I fell in love with it in the 9th grade when we took a school field trip to Fayetteville to see Oklahoma. I've been fortunate to see Cabaret and Mamma Mia on Broadway, Thoroughly Modern Millie, 42nd Street, and The Producers in LA, and a great touring production of Chicago in Fayetteville. It's a good thing I don't live in NYC because I'd be absolutely broke going to all the shows!

If you like musicals and ever get a chance to see Wicked, I highly recommend it. It was, hands down, the best one I have ever seen!

Arkansas Christmas

This will be the first year that I'll be by myself on Christmas day and only the second time that I've ever spent the holiday outside of Arkansas. I wasn't planning on going home at all because flights are just too darn expensive. But luckily I was able to find a cheap flight, so this past weekend I headed out to Little Rock for a Turner Christmas celebration. After taking the red-eye from LA to Chicago (which left an hour late causing me to miss my connecting flight and have to wait 2.5 hours to catch the next one), I arrived in Little Rock at about 10:30 am. After a quick hello to my brother and nephew, my parents and I headed to Fort Smith, so I could see my grandparents. On the way to the Fort, I insisted we stop over in Russellville and eat at Whataburger, home of the best milkshakes in the country! And yes, it was absolutely freezing outside!! I had a nice, albeit brief, visit with my grandparents, then we got up Saturday morning and headed back to Little Rock.

I spent the rest of the weekend hanging out with my niece and nephew. We opened our gifts Saturday night and spent the next two days playing laser tag and Hannah Montana video games. Caroline and Nicholas even decorated a gingerbread house, which I forgot to take a picture of. Their motto...if you make a mistake, eat it! Each morning, Caroline and Nicholas would get up and find where Billy the elf had gone to. You see, Billy watches Caroline and Nicholas during the day to make sure they are being good. Then, at night he goes to the North Pole to report their behavior to Santa Clause and shows up in a new spot in the morning to keep them on their toes. Nicholas was able to snap a picture of the elusive Billy.

All in all, it was a great weekend! I got to visit with my family, I was fed delicious home cooked food (it's wonderful having a brother and sister-in-law who like to cook!!), I got to eat good Mexican food (which is sadly missing in LA), and I had a cherry vanilla Dr Pepper from Sonic (another thing sadly missing in LA). If only I could've stayed just a few more days!

Today I Saw....

...Will Smith get his hands and feet immortalized at the Chinese Theater. And no matter how weird Tom Cruise can get, I still get starstruck when I see him. I mean, it's TOM CRUISE!!

For Your Consideration

Since the University of Arkansas seems to be having a hard time finding a football coach, then let me make a suggestion...

HIRE ME!!!

That's right, I'm officially putting my hat in the ring. Let me outline the top 10 reasons why I should be considered:

1) I live and breathe the Razorbacks. I think it's important that the new coach understand the passion the state of Arkansas has for its equivalent of a professional sports team.

2) I'm not only a fan, but an alumnae (look it up - there's another good reason...I know fancy words like that).

3) I know a lot more about football than the average girl, so don't let my gender fool you. I've been studying the game since I was a wee little tyke. And by studying, I mean quarterbacking my schoolyard team at Bonneville Elementary and watching religiously every weekend since my Mom said I couldn't tryout for the junior high team. In fact, just last week my roommate said, "Girl, you really do watch a lot of football!"

4) To make up for what knowledge I lack, I know how to surround myself with people who know what they're doing, and more importantly, actually allow them to do their thing.

5) I could be hired for the very bargain basement price of $250,000 and honestly, I'd consider taking less.

6) I love Fayetteville and would move back there in a heartbeat. Plus, I don't have any "family" to consider in the relocation factor.

7) I already know how to call the Hogs and the words to the fight song and "Hard to be Humble."

8) You would never hear me exclaim, "I called that play, brutha" whether or not I actually did.

9) No one else seems to want the job.

10) And finally, I HATE texting!

Mmmmm...Fried Cheerios!!

Growing up, my parents used to make us Fried Cheerios. A skillet, a little bit of butter, and some cheerios and you've got a delicious snack!

Well, I went to Target last night to buy some snacks for work and came across a product I had never seen before - Cheerios Snack Mix. I'm not much of a chip person, but I love snack mixes and I wondered if it would taste like fried cheerios. And let me tell you, it does. I think I just found my new favorite snack, and I wanted to share with the world (ok, the few people who read this blog)!

Article

I've already made my first political post and it just so happened to be about Hillary. I did not necessarily intend for my second political post to be about her, too, but that's the way it's shaking out. There is a really great write-up in the Chicago Tribune about her that I encourage y'all to check out. It's a bit lengthy, but worth the read. And I'm gonna send my apologies in advance because as the year rolls on, I'm probably going to have a lot more postings on the presidential election. It's fun, and I hope you'll humor me when I rant and rave.

Clinton: Most famous. Least known?

OH HAPPY DAY!!!

I cannot even begin to express how excited I am that Houston has resigned! Though some of my excitement has been tempered by how Arkansas fans were portrayed in the national news. I am so sick of the one-sided stories that everyone puts out there. One even said that a majority of fans didn't want him gone. Where'd the guy get this information? Every single person I know wanted him gone. I'm hard-pressed to think of one person that wanted him to stay. Now I know there were some out there, but there is absolutely no way that they were in the majority. Correction: I have just learned that I know one person who wanted him to stay, so for the purposes of full disclosure I feel that this should be made public. And while I think about it, my grandpa probably wanted him to stay, so let's say I know two people.

The bottom line is it was time for him to go. Houston did a lot of great things for the program. Then the warm fuzzies faded, and I realized he wasn't that great of a coach - he had gotten us as far as he was going to be able to. Then, things went down that made me question his integrity, which deeply broke my heart as I was always a personal fan of his. I know there are two sides to every story and it's not fair for me to pass judgment, so I am choosing to forgive and move on. Good luck, Houston! I wish you well wherever you end up!

So in summation...vote for Mel B or Helio, just not Marie!! PLEASE!!

WHAT?! WE WON!!!!

Did we really just beat the #1 team in America?! I am in utter disbelief! Why haven't we played that well all year? It almost makes the season that much more frustrating. Aarrghh. But instead of whining over what could have been, I'm going to relish the moment. Good job Hogs!

5 final thoughts:
1) What a way to end the season! Now we'll go to a better bowl game and hopefully win.
2) Darren McFadden is freakin' awesome, and I'm glad he got to showcase his stuff against the best team in the country.
3) That Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis aint half-bad either!
4) Good job, Houston! That was a great win to make you look much more desirable to other schools with open coaching positions. Good luck!
5) To the powers that be, please don't let this win fool you into a false sense of security and the need to keep Houston around. It's time to cut the cord!

Golden Boot, welcome back to Arkansas (say it with me, Ar-kun-SAW)!!

Fight On!

So I did the unthinkable when I moved to LA and became a USC fan. Out here, you're either a Trojan or a Bruin and there's no in between. Growing up, I was a UCLA fan and desperately wanted to go to school there. Then senior year of high school came and went and I got no response from them, not even a stupid application! Then their law school rejected me. So I came out here with the right attitude to become a Trojan fan. And low and behold I made a friend who went to USC and he easily converted me to a fan. So though I was devastated to learn that Damian and Mitch were no longer going to be wearing the most beautiful uniform on the planet, I found solace in the fact that they were coming out here to be with me in sunny LA! I look forward to the next three years of watching them play. As my old tax professor loved to say (especially to me after USC stomped Arkansas), FIGHT ON!!

God is good!

I've been in quite a funk the last few days. I don't know what brought it on, but I rarely do. It's just something that creeps up on me more often than I care to admit. So I did what I always do and broke out my Maple Street Worship cd. If you're unaware of Maple Street, it's the cd of the praise band at University Baptist in Fayetteville when I was in college. It is my absolute favorite!! It never fails to calm my heart and refocus me on what really matters. I awoke to a gorgeous day here in sunny LA and as I drove to work singing at the top of my lungs, I was reminded of the beauty of God's creation. It's nice to get a swift kick in the butt every once in awhile and be reminded of all the things I have to be thankful for.

My debut/finale all in one shot

I'm such a tease. I forgot that I put up a sneak peek! Ah well, hopefully not too many of you were waiting at the edge of your seat.

One of the brief jobs I had in the past year was a short two-week stint as the assistant to Gordon Ramsay on the LA portion of Kitchen Nightmares. As a lowly PA I was required to be a patron of one of the restaurants because they were having trouble filling it up. I also got a credit as a production assistant. So below are pics from my debut and finale on national television.

HEI5MAN!!

D-Mac's numbers were ridiculous! 323 yards!! I don't have much to say other than that kid can play! What a game. It makes me so happy to watch the Hogs play up to their potential. Although my feelings towards Nutt remain the same.

I like how the announcers called the disgruntled fans "childish." I was yelling at the TV. I agree that flying banners is a bit absurd, and I definitely don't support those antics. But those announcers didn't really study up on the situation. Their comments were very uninformed. Who are they to walk in on one game and say that Nutt is the best fit for Arkansas and he's an amazing coach and we're all idiots for wanting him gone?! Give me a break! We had one good game. Let's look at those other three we've lost. Let's look at the lack of anything resembling a passing game. Let's look at the inconsistency of the defense, especially the secondary. Let's look at the people he's run off. When you know the whole situation, then you can comment on it.

Alright, despite my rant, I was relatively pleased with the performance. We seemed to finally click on all cylinders (well, except the passing). And Houston seemed to call the right plays, so I'll give him credit. So I say a hearty congratulations to Houston and the boys...hopefully we can keep it up!

Finally, I'd like to post a little tribute to Frank Broyles. The man is a legend and his contributions to the University of Arkansas will not be forgotten. It's only fitting that the field be named in his honor. Thanks Frank for all you've done! Woo Pig!!

Yes, this is actually a real sign in the neighborhood where I work! Who knew it was so dangerous?!

Election Covereage '08: Hillary

I've always found Hillary to be a fascinating person. She is one of the most divisive figures in politics, yet she very well may be our next president. For purposes of full disclosure, let me just say upfront that I'm a fan of Hillary's and as of right now, she's got my vote. Though I reserve the right to change my mind considering it's over a year until the actual election. But I just wanted to get that out there, so feel free to stop reading if you wish. But I hope you'll indulge me and read on.

I am not registered with either party and consider myself pretty independent. Certain views I have are pretty conservative and certain views I have are pretty liberal. You can call me a liberal Republican or a conservative Democrat, though I tend to identify myself as a Democratic-leaning independent. It's funny because back in Arkansas I felt like I stuck out as being too liberal, yet out here in Cali I definitely stick out as being too conservative. I went from one extreme to the other. But that's the problem with America. We've become a country of extremes and only want to fight with each other rather than work for the common good.

But I actually came here to talk about Hillary. I encounter many people who dislike her, and I always ask why? The majority of time I get one of two responses: 1) Because she stayed with her husband for political gain, or 2) Because she's a ***** (I think you all know what I'm implying without me actually saying it). A good chunk that throw out reason #1 to me are fellow Christians. I find this incredibly laughable. We discourage divorce and encourage forgiveness, yet many of us continue to judge her for doing just that. And who are we to say that Hillary stayed with Bill for political gain? Maybe she did...or maybe she really loves the man and chose to forgive. It's something that only Bill, Hillary, and the Man upstairs know for sure, and I for one have no right to question. As for reason #2, this is where my feminist nature comes out. I don't really consider myself the bra-burning variety, but I'm definitely an encourager of women. I'm sorry, but if you believe that men and women stand on the same footing in this country, then you are sadly disillusioned. Any strong woman in a position of power is called a ***** at some point, but a man is considered a good leader and competent at his job. And since I don't know Hillary personally, I would never attempt to attack her character in such a vile manner.

I've written before about how annoying I find it when people are one issue voters. Many Christians vote Republican solely on the basis of the abortion and homosexuality issues. Many liberal factions vote Democratic using equivalent reasoning. And we'll see a new crop of that in the next election as I'm sure many women will vote for Hillary simply because she's a woman; or conversely, many black Americans will vote for Obama if he gets the nomination. But this is not the way to cast a vote. In this day and age, it's so easy to research the issues and each candidate's stance on them. So I encourage you to start today. Investigate, do some digging, see how they all line up on the issues, and then make your decision.

Here are some links to get you started:
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/youdecide2008/platforms/index.html

I'm going to be honest, Hillary does not share my position on every issue out there, but she comes the closest of them all. I'm not going to give her my vote strictly because she's a woman, and I'm not going to withhold my vote because I question her motives for staying married. I'm giving her my vote because of all the candidates, she shares ideas similar to mine and I believe she is the most qualified and competent for the job at this juncture. As I said, I reserve the right to change my mind as the election unfolds. And I hope everyone can take their blinders off, do some research, and be open to change. We don't have to vote a certain way because someone told us to, and that's the beauty of America!

Go Red Sox!

I didn't get to enjoy the Red Sox' 2004 World Series win because they defeated my beloved St. Louis Cardinals. And while the Sox are my second favorite team, my devotion to them pales in comparison to my devotion to the Cards. But I'll be rooting for them full force over the next week. And now I can say out loud, "Go Red Sox!"

SoCal Fires

When I first moved out here, everyone would call anytime there was any wildfire in the area. Over the years, people have come to be concerned less and less because only once has one of them been anywhere remotely near me. This time is no exception as I've continued moving further and further into the city, thus necessitating less concern. However, the Malibu fire that continues to burn out of control is continuing to scorch and threaten an area that I spent the better part of 4 years in. I found some pictures online to give y'all an idea.

This is a picture looking directly at the law school. I lived in campus housing that is just on the other side of the law school. I was talking to one of my friends last night about how absurd we thought it was that we had to have wildfire evacuation drills when we lived there, but I guess it's a good thing that they make residents do that year after year. I'm so thankful that I'm not having to deal with all of that. I can only imagine that most of the grad school residents feel pretty helpless because it is heavily attended by out of state students, unlike most of the undergrad who can pack up and go home.

The fire has destroyed several homes in the area. I was saddened to hear that it burned down the "beloved" Castle. I say beloved in quotes because many area residents consider it an eyesore. I, however, always thought it was pretty awesome. It was always a location I pointed out to anyone who visited me. The picture below is what it looked like sitting up on the Malibu hillside in all its glory.

The fire also burned down a church right across the street from Pepperdine. I passed Malibu Presbyterian every day going to and from school. It's kinda bizarre to think that it's not there anymore. One of the local morning show hosts lives in Malibu and attends church there. As her pastor pointed out to his congregation in the midst of this travesty, a church is not the building, but rather the people. I pray that the weather shifts and the firefighters can get all of these raging fires under control, and I pray that all of the individuals affected by these fires can take solace in the fact that a home is not the building, but rather the people.

Pumpkin Palooza

In my previous blog I mentioned that we carved pumpkins last weekend. I hadn't done that in forever! I had a lot of fun and thought I'd share some pics. I was going for an Arkansas theme with my pumpkin. I tried to give it a pig nose and I think you see what I was going for with the teeth...or lack thereof.

A Happy Birthday Post to my Nieces!!

Happy 1st Birthday, Jordyn!

I can't believe you're already one! My how time flies. I feel like I'm missing your babyness, just like I missed Caroline's and Nicholas'. And now that you live so far away, I fear you're going to be a terrible toddler before I get to see you again. I hope you have (well, had since you're probably close to going to bed at this time) a great birthday. I bet mommy's cake sure was yummy! Tell Mommy to keep taking lots of pictures so that we can all watch you grow up. I love you lots and can't wait to see you and your brothers again!!

Happy Belated 7th Birthday, Caroline!

I thought it would be fun to post birthday greetings on here, but I just got this bright idea. Since your birthday was just a couple of weeks ago, I didn't want to leave you out! What can I say about you, Caroline? You are the most intriguing girl I know. You are a walking contradiction. Never have I known someone who is so girly, yet so tough at the same time. You are the perfect niece for Jolee and me. She can appeal to your girly side, and I can appeal to your rougher side! I can't believe that you're 7 years old. You are growing up so fast. I hate that I don't get to see you and your brother that often, but when I do I certainly enjoy it. My favorite thing to do is sit at the bar and color with the two of you, even though it always turns into a fight over who gets what crayon! Remember that I love you lots. Maybe you can talk your Mom & Dad into bringing you and your brother out here to visit sometime soon!

My Awesome Day

For those of you who are unaware, my job is in the heart of Hollywood right by the famous Chinese theater and where all the stars line the sidewalks. It's been fun being in the area because I get to do all the touristy things on my lunch break. But even better is the fact that I've already seen a bunch of famous people in the short time I've been working there. There's a Backstreet Boy who has a studio on our floor (Kevin, in case you're interested). One week I spent my lunch breaks watching Will Smith and Charlize Theron film scenes for John Hancock, which is a huge summer blockbuster pic coming out around 4th of July. I saw Hilary Swank getting on an elevator as I was getting off another one. I passed Carnie Wilson on the street filming some sort of interviews. But today, well today was the best day of them all. The elevator doors opened and who was waiting there to ride all the way down to the lobby (10 whole floors!) with me? The one and only Ryan Reynolds! Now some of you may say, who? Aren't Will Smith and Charlize Theron way more exciting? And to all of you who don't immediately know the answer, let me please direct you to my previous post entitled The Nines. Ah, life is good!

A Blog About Nothing

I haven't written anything in a couple of weeks. I know a couple of people read this blog, so I thought I'd just give a little update for those that care. Not much is going on out here. Just getting into the routine of working. It's a busy time for me because all the new tv shows are starting, and I like to sample a good chunk of them. Not too much is grabbing my interest so far, though Pushing Daisies finally premiered tonight and I must say that it was excellent! I've been looking forward to it since last May when I found out it was from the creator of Wonderfalls, one of my all-time favorite shows (which I'm sure none of you have even heard of considering it only aired 4 episodes before getting the axe!). But I encourage you to check out Daisies. It's very quirky and original. You won't be disappointed. Plus, I'd really like it to stick around a bit longer than Wonderfalls! If you've seen any new shows you think I should check out, send me a comment. I'm always up for suggestions.

I know this wasn't a very exciting post, but like I said, I just wanted to give those couple of you who read this an update. I'm going to try to keep this thing updated a bit more often. Mainly for you, Jolee, since it's so hard to actually get to talk to you seeing as how you live halfway across the world!

'Til next time...

Brandon is famous!!

Two posts in one night...I'm a crazy woman!! But I wanted to go to bed on a happier note after my little rant below. One of my very best friends, Brandon, has done quite a bit of extra work over the last year. For those of you unfamiliar with extras, those are all the people in the background of the movies/tv shows you watch. I've even had the joyous experience of being an extra on a Robert De Niro movie, and let me tell ya, I'll never be doing that again!! It's a whole lot of sitting around and doing nothing. And while it's pretty neat to watch the whole process and see the movie stars, it gets pretty old after a couple of hours.

Anyway, back to Brandon. He did a bit of work on IronMan, which is coming out this summer. They just released the trailer for it and guess who you can see at the very beginning?! That's right...BRANDON!! He's officially the most famous person I know! Congratulations, Brandon!! Please don't let this all go to your head anymore than it already has!

Another week, another loss!

What a frustrating season this is going to be. We were out-coached for the second straight week, and I feel this is likely going to be the pattern once we get back into SEC action. Now I've obviously never played football, but even I could do a better job than what this coaching staff is doing. You know what? If the man-to-man defense isn't working, switch to the freakin' zone already!! If you have a quarterback who can't throw and receivers who can't catch it (likely because they're so shocked the ball actually got to them), then run it down their throats. Houston, we wanted you to pass the ball last year - when we had the All-American quarterback!! Not this year when our guy struggles to throw the ball more than 5 yards. Casey Dick is a good kid, but he's not a good quarterback. Surely there is someone else out there that can step up and take the reigns. And enough with the trick plays already! They're fine a couple of times a game, but not every other play. People are catching on...they're not really that tricky anymore.

The only bright spot about all this is that it's exposing what a weak coach Houston Nutt actually is. I was a fan when he first came to Arkansas, but I realized long ago he wasn't going to be the man to win us an SEC championship, much less a national championship. Last year was fun, but it was a fluke. D-Mac suprised everyone and no one knew how to defend him. But the surprise is over this year, folks. Nutt's job was saved by Matt Jones a couple of years ago and it was saved by D-Mac last year. And I fear that the last thing the new AD will want to do as his first official act is get rid of the football coach, so unfortunately we'll probably be stuck with him for another year. But at least more and more people are waking up to the fact that Nutt's tenure at Arkansas has run its course. It's time to thank him for his efforts and move on to bigger and better things.

I feel bad for all the players because they deserve better than what they're getting. It's a shame that one of the best players to ever wear an Arkansas uniform is wasted on this sorry excuse for a coaching staff.

Thanks for letting me vent! Who knows, maybe things will take a turn for the better, and I'll be forced to eat my words in a few months. And let me tell ya, I'll gladly do that in a second!

If you can't laugh at yourself...

So it was disappointing to lose the game this weekend, and of course it was frustrating to watch Crawford drop this pass. But it did provide me several minutes of hysterical laughter, especially when they replayed it over and over. And I just couldn't help but post it for everyone's amusement.

The Nines

One of the great things about living in LA is that you have the opportunity to see a lot of really great independent movies that tend to bypass middle America. One such little movie I had the pleasure of seeing this weekend was The Nines. Now I'm gonna be honest, I was initially drawn to the movie because Ryan Reynolds was in it, and I love me some Ryan! But I thought the story looked pretty intriguing as well and decided to check it out.

I'm not going to comment much on the actual story because I want to encourage everyone to go see it...or more realistically, rent it. The writer/director crafted a well thought out allegory that addresses the relationship of the creator and his creation. After a little digging, I learned that the writer is openly gay and from what I can gather non-religious. So, wait a minute...an openly gay, nonreligious man made what I believe is one of the most accurate and most thought-provoking religious themed movies I've ever seen? Don't get me wrong, there were several glaring theological inaccuracies, but as a whole he nailed it. Just goes to show you that everyone is aching for an explanation/understanding and while many don't even realize it, it's already written on their heart. I found this so very encouraging. Just imagine what we can do if Christians bombard the industry. And be encouraged, they are trying! I get the joy of living amidst them and seeing their progression every day!

Welcome to My Blog!

I was enjoying looking at everyone else's blog, so I decided to start my own. I blog from time to time on MySpace, but it's just not as user-friendly as this site. I may transfer over my old blogs, just to give this one a jumpstart.

This isn't going to be a blog about my family, as I'm still living the unattached carefree single life. Though I love reading about all y'alls families and will probably blog about mine as well when the time comes! In the meantime, I'll be blogging about the things going on in my life out here in Los Angeles. Maybe some about movies I've seen, television shows I've watched, or books I've read. And definitely a lot about sports...especially the Razorbacks!

So welcome! Feel free to comment at your whim.
